SHIRAS MOOSE HUNT

East Kootaney, British Columbia

the thrill of calling in a bull at dawn, the crisp mountain air in your lungs, the memory etched into your soul.

Step into the untamed wilderness of the East Kootenays where snow-dusted alpine ridges meet vast timber valleys and river bottoms echo with the grunt of the elusive Shiras moose.

The East Kootenays is home to some of the largest Shiras moose in North America. Dense-bodied with heavy, dark paddles and wide spreads. Limited opportunity and controlled access into our remote hunting area offers an authentic backcountry experience with excellent trophy potential.

Our guides know the terrain and the behavior of these cagey bulls providing for a high success.Take comfort in the wild, spike camps, remote cabins, horse assisted access or lodge-based comfort, you choose the level of wilderness. This is your chance to chase one of one of North America's elusive moose subspecies in the rugged back country, where nature still rules and every moment pulses with opportunity. It's not just about taking a bull, it's bout earning it!

BOW SEASON:
SEPTEMBER 22nd - October 10th

This is an opportunity to hunt the peak rut, which can really get the blood pumping! The days are spent calling, racking and glassing, often hunting from the moment you leave camp on horseback until returning at last light.

Our experienced guides will lead you into remote moose sanctuaries, utilizing cow calls and racking to entice a response and draw bulls into the open.

Once a bull has been located, we continue to coax him into shooting range with the sweet sound of cow calls. This can start from as far as 800 yards, during the rut bulls are very receptive to calling, I've heard it being described as "pulling him in on a shoestring".

We continue to sneak in undetected once we have the bull’s full attention. He’s closing the distance now, grunting and thrashing everything in sight. You see him at 100 yards and he’s big! 85, 60, he stops at 42, you release your arrow, you hear contact and the thunderous sound of footsteps and branches snapping under the weight of your bull hitting the forest floor.

Success! Time to celebrate and put our tough mountain horses to work packing your harvest and trophy back to the trail head.
